20110704 From The Interrogation Room to a Mass Rally - Jerusalem
The root of the affair lies in the book 'The King's Torah', published by Rabbis Yosef Elitzur and Itzchak Shapira, the head of a Jewish religious school in the extremist Israeli settlement of Yitzhar, and endorsed by Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef. The book, which focuses on the application of Jewish Halacha law, offers justification for Jews to kill non-Jews, including children, during times of war. In writing and endorsing it the rabbis are suspected of incitement and calling for violence and racism.
There is just one state I know of where theologists stand above the law, where clergy cannot be interrogated by police, where laws of religion govern the land - The Democratic Republic of Iran - neither democratic nor a republic. It is to this type of darkness that religious fanaticism is striving to draw a true democracy.
A few thousand showed up for the rally. The opening announcement was typical of other statements made later, and of Halacha; "All women are kindly requested to move to the back, behind the bridge!" - God forbid the distinguished rabbis should see women and loose focus of matters at hand. After a grand entrance to a cheering crowd, Rabbis Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef, the heroes of the affair, spoke to the audience. Two of the most worrying statements were "We have only one supreme judge!" and "Don't worry, the revolution has already begun!"
Following words it was time for deeds and as the crowds dispersed from the rally it was the youth, so easily maneuvered by the Rabbis' statements, either directly or indirectly, that took to the streets. To prove their loyalty to the rabbis and their disobedience of national laws they attempted to block traffic on Hertzel Boulevard and even stopped the tram. In a game of 'cat and mouse' police used water canons and horsemen to disperse them. Several arrests were made.
