20110803 Firing the Ramadan Canon in Jerusalem
The holy month of Ramadan takes place this year between August 1st and September 3rd, including Eid Al-Fiter. During this month Muslims fast during the day from dawn until dusk. In each Muslim city tradition dictates a canon to be fired daily at the exact times indicating the beginning and end of the fast. In Jerusalem the Ramadan canon is located in the Muslim Al-Saharah cemetery on Salah Al-Din Street and it is the responsibility of the Sanduka clan to fire it. It has been their responsibility for 120 years, since the Ottoman Period. Today, Haj Rajai Sanduka hosts Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat for firing the canon to indicate the end of fast. After all preparations, at exactly 19:41, Haj Sanduka and Mayor Barkat hold a radio-remote-control hand in hand and fire the old canon from a safe distance.
