2,000 Year Old Coin Discovered in Israel
Jerusalem, Israel. 14th March, 2016. Dr. DONALD ARIEL, Head Curator of the Coin Department at the Israel Antiquities Authority, holds a rare gold coin depicting the symbols of the Roman legions next to the name of the ruler Trajan on the back, and bearing the image of Emperor Augustus on front. Minted in Rome in 107 CE the coin was part of a series minted by Emperor Trajan as a tribute to Roman emperors that preceded him. The coin, discovered by a hiker in Israel’s North, is an identical twin to a coin owned by the British Museum and until now believed to be the only one of its kind known in the world.
