Structures which once served a nickel iron mining plant lay in neglect and decay in Prrenjas, Elbasan County. Albania has a population of just over 3 million, only one third of all Albanians in the world due to negative migration. Close to 60% of the population are Muslim, close to 20% unemployed and 15% below the poverty line. The transition from Communism which began in the 1990's has proven challenging due to high unemployment, widespread corruption, dilapidated infrastructure and powerful organized crime networks. The country is still one of the poorest in Europe.
