WMF Calls Attention to Lifta, Jerusalem
Jerusalem, Israel. 26th October, 2017. A religious man donning phylacteries, tefilin, and wrapped in a talit, a traditional Jewish prayer shawl, recites his morning prayers overlooking Lifta. The World Monuments Fund, in its 2018 World Monuments Watch, has called attention to 25 heritage sites and the forces that threaten them, among them the village of Lifta in Jerusalem. Once the biblical settlement Mei Naftoah, dating back to the First Temple period and mentioned in the Book of Joshua, then an Arab village abandoned in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, Lifta has remained almost untouched since. Massive redevelopment threats now arouse controversy with plans for luxury apartments, new roads and commercial development.
