Saving Sea Turtles at Mikhmoret, Israel
Mikhmoret, Israel. 20th January, 2019. Biologist YANIV LEVY (L), PhD, Israel Sea Turtle Rescue Center Manager, attaches a satellite tracking device to 'Nitzan', a loggerhead sea turtle, preparing it for release. The National Sea Turtle Rescue Center of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority is currently treating 46 injured sea turtles washed up on the Mediterranean shores nationwide. Approximately half of these patients are new arrivals from the last couple of stormy weeks characterized by soft tissue trauma (lungs, inner ear, abdomen, etc.) commonly caused by shock waves following underwater explosions, allegedly caused by seismic surveys conducted weeks ago in Italian waters near Sicily. The rescue center's goal is to treat injuries until turtles are ready for reintroduction into the wild.
