US Merges Jerusalem Consulate with Embassy in Israel
Jerusalem, Israel. 4th March, 2019. An agitated Jerusalem US Consulate security guard quickly turns away from camera after harassing photographer and baselessly trying to prevent photography of US Consulate General building. The Jerusalem US Consulate General on Agron Street, which has acted as a de facto embassy to the Palestinians since the 1990's Oslo Accords, merges with the US Embassy which will create a new 'Palestinian Affairs Unit' headed by a more junior official. Announced in October 2017 by US Secretary of State Pompeo with the intention to "improve efficiency and effectiveness”, the move brings all the Palestinian Authority affairs directly under the supervision of US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, viewed by Palestinians as biased in favor of Israel.
