20110124 Second Gas Price Hike Convoy at Jerusalem Ministry of Finance
In the battle against rising fuel prices a second convoy arrived from Tel-Aviv to the Finance Ministry in Jerusalem. The first was only two weeks ago. A fire spontaneously ignited on Facebook by Asher Ben-Ari and Zeev Grower moved to the roads attracting less than one-hundred participants. Deliberately driving slowly from the Tel-Aviv Glilot Junction to Jerusalem the convoy attracted the attention of drivers on the road, some honking in support, others in anger at traffic slowdown while the vast majority of Israelis chose to do no more than click "Like" on the group's Facebook page.
The spark for today's convoy was ignited by data published yesterday according to which Israelis pay almost thirty percent more for fuel than Europeans. Among the demonstrators were a few confined to wheelchairs who claimed gasoline serves as an alternative to their incapable legs. Also present were Members of Knesset, Nachman Shai and Yulia Shamalov Berkovich, from the Kadima opposition party.
Gas prices rose recently to a new all-time high - 7.27 NIS per liter for 95 octane fuel, the equivalent of 1.48 EURO or 7.61 USD per gallon.. The price hike is due mostly to taxation as the Israeli government reaches deep into consumers pockets taking 56 percent of what consumers pay for gas.
