20110404 Argentina FM Hector Timerman in Yad Vashem
Foreign Minister of Argentina Hector Timerman, visits Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. Appointed about one year ago, Jewish Hector Timerman considers his appointment as a "symbol of progress" for a society historically plagued by anti-Semitism. He has visited Yad Vashem several times in the past but this is his first as a representative of the Argentinian government.
Timerman is a former human rights activist and journalist like his father Jacob Timerman, who was arrested by the military in 1977 for two and a half years of torture for his left-wing opinions, Judaism and Zionism. Hector Timerman fled Argentina in 1978, received asylum in the US and studied international relations at Columbia University in 1981. From the US he lead the battle for his father's release. Jacob Timerman was eventually released, exiled from Argentina to Israel, where he wrote about his experiences in "Prisoner without a Name, Cell without a Number".
Hector Timerman returned to Argentina in 1984. He was appointed Argentina's Consul General in New York in July 2004 and later ambassador to the United States in December 2007. He has been holding the position of Foreign Affairs Minister since 2010.
