20110720 First awakening in Tent City Jerusalem
Residents of Tent City Jerusalem wake to their first morning of reality following the euphoria that accompanied the establishment only yesterday. It turns out the mattresses weren't as soft as those at home, it gets kind of sticky in the July night heat closed inside a tent and there are all kinds of weirdos roaming the area through the night. But they do not yet seem to have given up. They wash their faces in an improvised faucet, those with deep religious faith pray their morning prayers and there is already a poster with the days agenda hanging on one of the trees in the camp; 20:00 - a group discussion on possible housing solutions, 21:00 - dinner, 22:00 - a live concert and at 24:00 a summary of the day and bed-time stories.
Tent City Jerusalem was erected yesterday afternoon following the lead of similar protest around the country (see http://www.demotix.com/news/761243/newly-erected-tent-city-jerusalem-lead-university-students). The students are protesting the soaring prices of apartments for sale and for rent, that have escalated in the last decade to levels unattainable by these young people. They claim the solution is for the government to free up land for housing construction.
