As a child he witnessed Nazi book burnings and severe discrimination before escaping to England on the Kindertransport. Walter enlisted in the British army, was a driver in the British Royal Army Service Corps, took part in the invasion of Normandy and was transferred to Counter Intelligence where he interviewed Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop who denied all knowledge of the Holocaust. Bingham earned the British Military Medal for bravery in the field and was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur.
