Archaeologists of the Israel Antiquities Authority excavate in Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter at the site of the unearthing of four gold coins. The 1,000 year old coins, found in a ceramic juglet, are considered ‘an ancient savings box’. Discovered excellently preserved, coins are dated from the late 940s to the 970s CE, the early Islamic Period, a time of transition as control of the area was taken by force from the Sunni Abbasid caliphate, based in Baghdad, by the Shiite Fatimid dynasty of North Africa.
