A northward view from the City of David depicts the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. The City of David is an archaeological site and home to a park and visitor center managed by the Ir David Foundation, also known as Elad. This association openly aims to strengthen Jewish connection to Jerusalem, create a Jewish majority in Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem and renew the Jewish community in the City of David, which is also part of the Arab neighborhood of Silwan. The City of David is speculated to be the original urban core of ancient Jerusalem. Religious Jews are in the midst of observing the 'Three Weeks' or 'Bein HaMetzarim', a period of mourning over the destruction of the first and second Jewish Temples, a period that will climax on the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av, observed beginning the evening of 10th August, 2019.

In June 2019 Israel's Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate thus approving the sale of the New Imperial Hotel and the Petra Hostel to the Jewish right wing group Ateret Cohanim, which seeks to increase Jewish presence in the Old City. The Patriarchate filed a new indictment 5th August, 2019, with the Jerusalem District Court to annul the Supreme Court's decision citing new evidence including recordings and forged documents allegedly proving the 2004 deals involved bribes by then paid to former Patriarchate employee, Nicholas Papadimas.
