Chalaadi Glacier, outside the town of Mestia in the Svaneti Georgian province, is a trekkers' destination. Svaneti boasts the koshki, defensive stone structures built from the 9th century onward and is known for it's architectural treasures and picturesque landscapes, thus a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated on the southern slopes of the central Caucasus Mountains and surrounded by 3,000 - 5,000 meter peaks, Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus.

Located at an altitude of 2,100 meters near the foot of Shkhara, one of the highest summits of the Greater Caucasus mountains, Ushguli is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. It is home to 70 families and covered in snow for 6 months of the year. Often the road to Mestia is impassable.
